Spray Painted Upholstery Rocks!

I’ve been reading a lot on blogs about painting upholstery.

Some of it just looked too complicated for this “do it quick” girl.

Mix this, mix that.  Ugh!

Some of it looks and feels too…well…plastic.  Not a fan.

And then I stumbled upon this product and thought I’d give it a whirl.

I ordered it online here.

Let me tell you, I was impressed!

It went on su-hu-hu-hu-per quickly and evenly.  I was done with the first coat on this chair inside of 5 minutes.  FIVE MINUTES!!  Do you know how long it would have taken me to re-upholster this chair? Days, man! Days!!

I was painting in my basement, hence the dark “flash” photos.

I was so excited by this product, I ran up the stairs to tell Mr. Wonderful how great it was, when I came back down the stairs, I saw this.  Ooops!!

No worries, though.  It came right up with water.  This paint is made for upholstery…not wood.  Your surface has to be absorbent.

I was so excited about this paint and the easy process, that I pulled out two other chairs that had perfect upholstery, but were an ugly color. As you can tell, the two Frenchy chairs need another coat.  I have to order more.  My bad!

I got so excited that I started painting these two chairs before I had let the first chair dry to make sure it had good coverage.  Now, I have to wait for my second order to finish them all.  Ah, well.

I’ve also ordered some Navy Blue to paint the matching arm chair. That chair will go nicely in my master bedroom.  The gray chair is for Mr. Wonderful’s office.

Both chairs will get  a coat of ASCP on the wood surfaces.  Old white for the gray chair and Pure white for the blue chair.  I can’t wait to get them done and show you!

I know I’m sounding like a broken record–but, really, the whole process was EASY and QUICK.  It’s like a miracle in a can!  Seriously!!

And just for the record…I’ve not spoken to the company…they have no idea I’m a raving fan.  I’m just THAT excited about it.

My only complaints…not enough colors and the applicator button could be a little larger.  That bugger hurts your finger after 3 cans!

In my excitement, I’m probably forgetting a ton of details…ask away!

Bye from the bungalow,

  1. They look great, Jean! I love it on the Frenchy chairs! How long does it take to dry?

  2. Jean- Unbelievable! I have painted upholstery but never with paint made specifically for that purpose. I have a couple of chairs that desperately need a new color but the upholstery is in pristine condition. I am going to earmark this before I forget it. Thanks for the info-Now I am excited, too. How strong is the smell? I see you painted inside- xo Diana

  3. Hi, Jean

This looks great. I may have to give this a try. Love the chair. : )

    Hugs,

  4. I was so excited to find this post. I have some that I could use this treatment and it would be so much simpler than reupholstery. How many cans did you use? Was the fabric still soft feeling afterwards? What do they say about it coming off on people clothes (Navy Blue especially)? Thank you for sharing.

BTW . . . my parent’s grew up in Butte many, many years ago. I think I may still have some family in the area. Fond childhood memories of trips to Montana from Seattle :)

  5. Love your site! I did a similar thing with and old rocker and $2 worth of Rit dye. I simply mixed the dye in an old spray bottle with hot water and instant magic! It did not change the texture of the upholstery one bit like the paint has a tendency to do. My “woops” was all over the freshly painted wall…. :0)

  6. This is awesome! Thank you so much for sharing! The hardware stores or Wally World have a plastic inexpensive top you can buy to put on your spray can that turns it into a trigger spray and saves the button finger cramps. Fits on any regular spray paint can.

  7. OMGoodness, thanks for sharing! Your chairs looks fabulous!!

  8. OoooooKaaaaa….. I’m pinning this because I have two dining room chairs that I would “like” to use but they don’t match. I’ll give it a whirl. Might even order some of it tonight. They are small wing back chairs, you think I need two cans or 3?

  9. This is really good to know. Your chairs look amazing and so much easier that re-upholstering them. Thanks for sharing this:-)

  10. Jean, I love how these chairs turned out. This would certainly save a lot of work and time. What kind of upholstery did the big chair have on it. I really want to try this out. We are your newest members, would love for you to join us. Thank you for sharing.

  11. Even without extra coats I can tell the paint is working the way it was advertised – soft to the touch and very natural looking, like the upholstery was always that color. Okay, I’ve been looking at different blogs that use this and that method for nearly a year now, trying to work up the courage to spray paint a 26 year old not so expensive but much loved wing chair to a color that will go in my redone bedroom. It’s original color is “woodrose” (J.C. Penney, 1986) and it’s currently covered in a black stretch jersey knit slip cover, the fit of which leaves much to be desired. Would love to have the guts to spray paint it black, or charcoal grey, or black and white striped, yikes! Maybe your product is what I need.

  12. Thanks for sharing this. This product looks awesome. I’ve been reading over the various methods over the past months too, and didn’t feel too excited about any of them… So you had three cans and they almost covered three chairs? If I were doing just one chair – somewhat like the pair your painted- do you think 1 can would be enough?

  13. I need to try this! Your chairs look gorgeous!

  14. Chair looks great!! What color did you use??? Sage?

  1. [...] The first coat of Simply Spray charcoal paint I gave the chair cushions came out slightly blotchy, so I ordered another can and waited impatiently for it to arrive.  Check out the before here. [...]
