Dollar Store Valentine Craft

I purchased a few items from the Dollar Store in an attempt to “class it up”.  While it certainly came out less “cutesy”, I’m not sure I was successful in turning this cute banner into something a little more sophisticated.  You decide.

It started out like this.

Once again, I didn’t get a good before picture. Oops. I spray painted it with silver metallic paint and let it dry.  Then I cut the hearts out of the O’s and R’s.  I’m not a fan of the cutesy heart centers.

I made a template, traced around it and then cut out the center of the O’s and R’s.  I also glitter glued and glittered the edges.  I probably would have glittered the entire banner if I thought I would have had enough glitter.

The next Dollar Store item I grabbed to make over was this red felt ornament.  I’m not sure what to call it. It’s very large.

Another bad before photo.  *Sigh*

It got the same silver paint and all over glitter treatment. Now this one I like!

I teamed it up with some dollar store heart garland.  It looks more wedding-ish to me, though, than Valentine.  I’ll probably take the garland down and use it somewhere else.

I also painted and glittered some birds I found at Walmart.  They were originally gold.

Normally, I like to use old, vintage items to craft with.

Such as vintage mailboxes.  These are really fun to play with.  This one is hanging on my front door.  It replaced a mailbox decorated for Christmas.  I probably forgot to blog about that one.

I can’t remember where I got the cupids…Dollar Store maybe?

So, have you had better luck with Dollar Store crafts than me?  I’d love to hear about it!

Bye from the bungalow,

  1. I have yet to get to the store and do something. I hope I don’t miss it! I know exactly the big heart you are talking about!

  2. I love how you transformed these inexpensive items into beautiful works of art. I must admit, I’m a bit distracted by all the beautiful treasures you have on your mantel….haha, that’s right where my eyes focused. Love the bling you added to the sheet music and the way you decorated the mailbox.

  3. Jean- I think you did a great job. You would never know they started out as Dollar store items. GREAT job- xo Diana

  4. Success at the dollar store -love your sophisticated spray painted makeover!

  5. Aweomse! I love your transformation and it all looks so pretty! Thanks for joining in.

  6. I was drawn to the treatment of the edges of your medallions…. I’m always so busy concentrating on the making the folds and gluing the ends together that it never dawned on me to punch the edges. Really great looking!!!! And do I need to mention the fabulous bling????? LOL!
