Remember this shot?
C’mon, it was just two days ago! It was the desk I picked up that was refinished, but they had sanded the wood against the grain. I know what you’re thinking…the same thing I was thinking…who does that?
I mean, I thought sanding with the grain was a no-brainer. Like petting a cat from head to tail and not tail to head.
But then again, I rarely know how I know what I know, I just know what I know, ya know? So maybe they just don’t know.
Bottom line, it ain’t nothing a few hours of sanding can’t fix!
Bye from the bungalow,

Hi, I'm Jean. I live in historic Butte, Montana in a Craftsman home built in 1920. This blog is all about my adventures (and sometimes misadventures) in updating and decorating my house with antiques and vintage goods I find at garage sales, thrift stores, estate sales or wherever cool things from the past are waiting to be discovered.
It is beautiful now! I love it. And I love your stenciled bamboo mat! Gorgeous.
Debbie
Now that is funny…. I never ever thought of petting a cat from tail to head! I’m gonna try it sometime just to laugh at myself.
Bliss
I wouldn’t do that Bliss! Not many cats would like that – at least mine doesn’t – he would give you the “eye” and maybe a swat, haha. The desk came out beautiful but I absolutely love the bamboo mat! What a great stencil. And that typewriter! Awesome…

Hi, Jean
This looks great. I love the paint on the drawers. I have to say this is funny, but glad you wrote about this to remind us to be careful. I have a piece I was going to start today and I will make sure not to go against the grain. Have a great week
Vanessa
That turned out beautifully! It was worth the work!
Love the whole vignette! The typewriter and tins are awesome…..great job as usual!
jean,
that desk is GORGeous! i love the way you refinished it and those knobs are perfect. as well as the staging..beautiful.
and i KNOW what you mean about KNOWING stuff!

Now you are right….I don’t pet my cat tail to head, but I do brush her fur that way sometimes to get out the old stuff. She is ok with it for just a few strokes and then I get that look………:)
This piece is so so pretty and I love your accessories! Beautiful work!
What is really scarey for me????? I learned how to type on a typewriter just like that!!! Oh my, I am old! Desk is awesome BTW.
It’s called “common sense”. Not everyone has it (too bad). I still have a question that I can’t seem to find the answer to…are we born with it, or is it taught, or is it some of both? Lack of common sense just drives me crazy! I know it shouldn’t
Oh how I would love to transport that entire setting right into my home. Such beautiful work Jean! It never stops amazing me what kind of ‘refinishing’ jobs you’ll come across when you do this
Another “oops” project you made beautiful!!
Lovely! I don’t know how I knew about how to sand wood either. Maybe my dad told me over and over again as a child
I just LOVE this two tone. What a perfect choice! Love how you staged it, too! BRAVO
It looks great! My dad taught me how to sand with the grain when I completely ruined a beautiful cherry board.
