Mantel Mania and…hollow screws?

The Lettered Cottage blog is having a Summer Mantel Link Party, so I thought I would give it a go and try my hand at mantel decorating. I already know this is not my forte’.  Fireplaces were not high on the list of priorities in military housing, therefore I haven’t gained much practice at mantel decorating.  Off I go anyway!

I tried 3 different iterations on the mantel decorating.  This is attempt #1.

Meh.  It didn’t wow me.  But my new blue enamel ware pots sure do! I’ll tell you about acquiring those in a future post.

Attempt #2

This one actually looks better in person and gives the room a lighter feel from the second I walk in.  The mantel is so long and dark as is the brick on the fireplace.  It could use a little lightening up.

Attempt #3

These were taken at a different time of day, which wasn’t ideal (too many shadows), but I think this is my favorite.  Maybe because it’s showcasing my new enamelware or maybe it’s because it has lots of color mixed with the whites.  Or maybe it’s because I found a mantel tutorial on Pinterest and followed the advice.  It suggested starting with something larger in the center and working your way out.  And it suggested layering, which I didn’t do.

If you’re wondering why I never took the clock down and played around with different, bolder items in the background, it’s because that clock is a bugger to hang back up.  I don’t need the frustration!  I’m already frustrated with a light fixture in my kitchen that I can’t remove because of a teeny, tiny hollow screw that I CANNOT seem to get out.  This screw is smaller than the clickable tip of a pen, but it’s the bane of my existence right now!  Errrgghhh!!

That leaves me with two questions today:  What’s your favorite mantel? and How do you remove a teeny, tiny, hollow screw?  If you can answer that second question, I will send my middle child to your home to give you the biggest bear hug you have ever had!  You will like it…if you survive!

Bye from the bungalow,

I love them all, but the last is my favorite! And I really really loved the guest room pictures!
    Did you try eyeglasses screwdriver?

  2. Donna Skaggs says:

Love the one with the white..(you know me) My mantle has white and old silver on it right now, along with my victorian florals

  3. Hi, I’m visiting from Layla’s Summer Fun Link up party.

I love them all – I’m a huge fan of blue, but I love the simplicity of the white, too! Blue and white, of course, is a perfect combination!

  4. I love those enamel pots – and number 3 is my favorite mantel too! I have no idea how to remove that screw but just put a new picture hanger right over it and act like it’s not even there!! Who’s gonna know?!

  5. Number 3 is my favorite, too! Love your blue enamel ware with the American flags. So fresh for summer! 🙂

  6. I love all of the “options”! I’m following along now. 🙂
