The Backyard Bungalow Basement Bar Makeover in Progress

I’m going to attempt to show you what’s happening in my basement bar area.

It’s not pretty.

Don’t expect a lot.

And yes, I used the dreaded FLASH!  The blogging no-no!  But, hey, if I didn’t you wouldn’t be able to see anything!

It’s a basement…and it’s dark.

basement before

This is how the basement bar area looked when we viewed the place before buying it.

This is the bar area before we started tearing it apart.

You may be asking yourself, “Why IS there a bar in your basement? And why are you moving it?”

The bar in the basement is a Butte thing, I guess.

When we were searching for our dream home (how could this be IT when it needs so much work?!!) we saw many basements with many bars.  Perhaps it’s where folks go in the Winter to warm up.  For us, it’s where we go to watch TV at night and imbibe in a tall glass of wine.

As for why I’m moving the bar?

Well, it’s in the middle of the room silly!

Long shot of moved bar

Halfway through getting it moved, Mr. Wonderful says “I really had no problem with where the bar was in the first place.”

Au contraire mon frere! Who said you get a say in this at all?  (For the record, I ignored that comment.)

Here is where the bar sits now.  I know, like Mr. Wonderful, you can’t see my vision.  Trust me…it’s gonna be epic!

Bar header with lights

This red header is coming down with an electricians help.  I don’t need it and it was much too 50’s retro for my tastes.

Inside bar painting

The inside of the bar is getting a coat of white paint from Sherwin Williams.  It was too orangey and unattractive to leave it as was.

Bar with ceiling tin

The outside of the bar got a facelift with some old ceiling tin!  My vision is starting to materialize!

The top of the bar  will be sanded down and given a new darker finish.

Can you see where I’m going with this?

I’m getting an estimate today on dry-walling over those square wood panels.  Can I get a collective eww regarding that ugly square paneling?

I’ve already purchased a new sisal rug and some mercury glass lamps to go in this room.  I’m still searching for the perfect sofa and lighting for the ceiling.

Speaking of ceiling…did you notice the bead board ceiling in here?  And the original wood floors?

I know…wood floors in a basement!  How did I get so lucky?!!

Today, I’ll be putting the freshly painted doors back onto the bar’s cabinets and trying to get some sense of order in here.  There are glasses and booze bottles everywhere!  Not from a drunken party, mind you, just nowhere to put things when your bar is being moved!

There you have it…I know it’s not much to look at right now, but soon…it’ll be a showplace.  Well…at least to me, anyway.

Bye from the bungalow,

  1. Ha ha! I know about a hundred jokes about St. Patrick’s Day drinking in Butte!! Can’t wait to see your vision come to fruition. We bought a house once where the bar front was covered in shake shingles…double ewwww. I do love those tin ceiling tiles on the front of yours….so pretty!

  2. See a difference in the transformation so far. Can’t wait to see what else you will do.

  3. Jean-That is really a lot of work and you have got a lot done already. I can’t wait to see your vision realized. It’s gonna be great I can tell- xo Diana

  4. Well if the rest is as awesome as the tin front, I’m gonna love it.

  5. The first thing that caught my eye were those fabulous pipes hanging from the ceiling! What are they for? Wiring, plumbing? I’m curious!
Love the tin ceiling tile & that it worked well around the curve of the bar front.

  6. Wow! Love what you’re doing down there. You have great ideas and it’s so nice that Mr. Wonderful goes along with them (well, most of the time!). Speaking of Mr. Wonderful, my husband just finished Fobbit, he loved the book. I loved his acknowledgements – to your children and especially to you. So touching, truly!

  7. I definitely think it needs a “French” look for any visiting chicks…..what a hangout!

  8. This is going to be spectacular!

  9. Definitely sounds epic. I can tell already it’s going to be fabulous.

  10. Love the ceiling tiles around the edge. I’m a fan. Many of the basements around here have bars. Many of them have full kitchens. Yes I did notice the wood floors in your basement, but not the beadboard ceiling. Why don’t you just paint that square paneling white? Your basement is gonna be rockin!

  11. I do see the vision and it definitely will be epic!!!! Already looks more epic in person! Should have taken pictures of the three Stooges trying to move the bar!!!! Never tell a couple of women It can’t be done. Now get the Sawzall out and go to work on the fireplace! 🙂

  12. Oh, this is going to be fabulous! I already see where you’re going…the tin is a great start…love it!! 🙂

  13. I can’t wait to see all the changes! I know it is going to be amazing!

    Happy day!

  14. Super cute!!

Can’t wait to see the finished product!

Have a blessed and wonderful day!!
